NEWS - Absent friends Day .
The very successful Absent Friends Day held at the end of May combined with the monies raised by Jim Paxton from his walk along the length of Hadrian's Wall has resulted in the club being able to present a cheque to the value of £2,768.90 to the Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Fund. The top photograph shows this presentation to members of the Regiment at a simple ceremony on 05.08.10 Our thanks also go to the England legend Rory Underwood who undoubtably added to the attendabnce on the day. The club also sends sincere thanks to all who worked so hard throughout the day, and also to the many hundreds of members and supporters who contributed so much to the success of the event.

RFU - Seal of Approval – An Essential Quality Standard

The Seal of Approval (SOA) encourages clubs to bring about systematic and continuous improvement . To achieve the standard, the Club needs to meet the criteria set out in the RFU guidance notes.

The information is based on a review of the guidance notes for Mini/youth SOA and it is probable that the Club will seek “Whole Club” SOA. There is a time pressure on the Club as the RFU have decreed that "Youth Rugby" must achieve accreditation by 2011 and the "Whole Club" sections must achieve it by 2017.

The Criteria.

The SOA sets out specific criteria which the Club must satisfy to gain accreditation. There are five areas within the criteria and within these there are twelve development strands. In turn, each development strand is broken down into more detailed requirements.

Area – 1. People:

            1.1. Players, 1.2. Coaches, 1.3. Referees, 1.4. Volunteers.

Area – 2. Member Services:
2.1. Playing and training, 2.2. Social

Area – 3. Member Welfare:

           3.1. Equity, medical and welfare

Area – 4. Community Links:

           4.1. Community links

Area – 5. Club Management

5.1. Finance, 5.2. Legal and administration, 5.3. Facilities and equipment , 5.4. Promotion and publicity.

The guidance notes provided by the RFU give full details of the standard which clubs must satisfy within each of the twelve development strands.

The Process.

There are three stages to achieving the SOA; phase 1 – Basic Criteria, phase 2 - Development Plan and Accreditation and phase 3 – Health Check and full Re-accreditation.

Actions by Newmarket RUFC.

1. Set up the working group - currently there is a chairman and one other volunteer. Immediately, we need three other volunteers, two of whom should be from Youth Rugby. This is very urgent at the date of writing, as the Club cannot proceed without this group and the timescale is short.

2. To examine the systems and documents the Club already has in place, and to decide which of them conform to the SOA standard.

3. Work through the SOA process to meet the deadlines.

4. Keep the members informed of progress.
