Wendons Ambo U9 0 – Newmarket U9 15

This promised to be quite a contest with both teams defending well until Newmarket’s hooker, Tage McEwan-Jonsson broke through and popped a pass out to Sam McNaughton to score before half time. Newmarket came out after the break with increased confidence. Will Christie broke through the visitor’s defensive line and passed to McNaughton to score his second. Wendons Ambo U9 15 – Newmarket U9 20

Newmarket
’s forwards drove the ball to the line and Joe May received a pass out at speed to open for the home team. Newmarket’s defensive play faltered and Wendons twice broke through on the flanks to score. Harry Robbins got one back before half time but again Wendons replied leaving them ahead at half time. The second half saw a much more fluid passage of play from the home side. May broke through again but disappointingly was unable to ground the ball over the try line. McNaughton touched down from the scrum and good passing play from the line out set Butler up to score. A tired Wendons side had nothing left in the tank and Newmarket finished ahead.

Newmarket U10 5 vs Wendon Ambos U10 25

A promising start to the first half with good tackling from Drew Wiley, James Judd and Felix Mangell was let down by poor rucking and four tries against.  A transformation in the second half with the Newmarket scrum winning lots of possession in the ruck and Michael Le and Sam Burrows showing particular skill kept the score sheet clean.  Wiley continued his good runs until a sustained period of possession and good rucking let Burrows go over the line for a try.

Newmarket U10 0 vs Wendon Ambos U10 20

This was a hard fought match with Newmarket very unlucky not to score.  Joseph Girgis, James Connell and Jack Nicholas stood out in the tackling department.  Millie Lee was exceptional in the loose ruck and fought hard for every ball. Twice the Newmarket scrum pushed the ball over the line, led by Lee, and twice were denied by the “video” ref.  Another excellent second half.

Newmarket U10 0 vs Wendon Ambos U10 50

A slightly tired Newmarket continued to do themselves credit.  This match was marked by an excellent tackle by John Doak on the opponent’s toughest runner.  His example inspired Connell, Wiley and Charlie Holmes to more excellent tackling efforts.  Lee and Wiley continued their good vein of form but a few missed tackles let their opponents score more than perhaps they deserved.  Overall these three matches showed some of the best rugby skills of the year and Lee deservedly received the Player of the Day award.

Newmarket U11’s  5  vs  Wendons Ambo U11’s 15

Newmarket, sponsored by Suffolk Motors, got of to a very sluggish start for their first home game of the season against a very well organised Wendons team.
The visitors took full advantage of this and spent the majority of the first half testing Newmarket’s defensive skills.
Just before the interval the pressure paid as Newmarket’s heroic efforts finally gave way to allow Wendons to score twice to open up a ten point lead.
The re-start gave Newmarket a chance to get back into the game and following a fine try from Aiden Curry there was hope in the side that they could turn things around.
However Wendons regained the upper hand and soon finished of any chance of a fight back when they scored for a third time to run out well deserved winners.

The second game saw a re-organised Newmarket side dominate all areas of play with an outstanding display of rugby.
Newmarket totally out scrumaged the visitors and this in turn gave the backs the opportunity to attack from all angles with James Godfrey and Sam Christie both being stopped just short of the try line as Wendons defensive line stood firm.
However, all the pressure finally paid off as Ciaran Abrahams scored his first try in Newmarket colours and Connor Pepperall added the extra points with the conversion.
The second half was a repeat of the first but somehow Newmarket were unable to add to the score as the Wendons defence managed to keep out the home sides constant pressure and as the final whistle went both sides knew they had been in a very hard and bruising game.
